The story follows Eva Zor, a Pangoro living somewhere in the Worlds of Nrafhal. The Pangoro has been living outside his clan for years, after a lost battle brought disgrace to their name. However, every once in a while he is met with mysterious «inspectors» wearing bony masks, and whose true agenda he can't discern.

The story takes place in the (by the time of publication) non-descript world of Outer Nrafhal. Various locations are featured, such as a mountain in the main continent, a valley, and at least two towns, but only Fugue Mountain is given a named mention in passing.

There are various references to other aspects of Nrafhal worldbuilding that are mentioned, and which would show up in future works:

• The Migration Wheel and the related ecological phenomenon that Dunsun, Horizontia and Génives accord into, are mentioned by a couple of characters as a steady seasonal source of jobs.
• One of the characters mentions the effort to dig into Fugue Mountain is part of a long-term campaign on the part of the Dunsun clans against another nation, referencing the Dunsun-Horizontia-Génives conflict that makes most of the political background of Outer Nrafhal.
• The outlaw tribe of Hell's Anoles makes an appearance.
• One character mentions a “three-eyed demon”, setting up the frame for the folklore tale of the “Gleevi–Nosr”.
