Tastes Anew

Summary

  • After Plasma's raid on Dragonspiral Tower, the Tao Dragons return to it to find themselves unable to find tribute to sate their hunger with. Thus they examine their options to quickly fetch food tributes, and in the end decide that the person best suited to help with this is N.

Release

Premise

The story takes place shortly after the events of Black and White. Reshiram and Zekrom find themselves hungry in a Dragonspiral Tower that has been looted by Team Plasma and thus is empty of food tributes. The dragon lords proceed to drag the Tower attendants in for some explaining, and evaluate their options in order to quickly fetch some food tributes. Foremost of which, is speaking to a human lord.

Cast

Locations

Act Ⅰ takes place within the Suocéverse version of Dragonspiral Tower. More specifically, a chamber right below the dragon lords' nests, used for the storage of loot and food tributes for Reshiram and Zekrom.

Continuity

Both Reshiram and Zekrom mention that they've recently met N, and they and other characters make a number of references to the events of Black & White. The mentions establish the timeframe for this story to within a few weeks, at most, after the ending of Black & White.

Given that Zekrom mentions having met N for a longer period and also mocks Reshiram for his interest in “lesser humans”, it is suggested that Mainline Suocéverse follows after the events of Pokémon Black Version, with N waking up Zekrom from his slumber.

The story introduces the lore concept that the elder dragons of Dragonspiral Tower have their own language (an adapted version of Dragonspeak). Later stories and supplementary materials indicate there are a number of draconic colonies in the continent speaking this language.

References

Some of the events of the G5 games are referenced by the characters in the story, mostly focusing on how Team Plasma's raid upon Dragonspiral Tower, that led N to the Tower to wake up the dragons, included the pillage of the scant tributes of food that remained in the Tower.

This story also marks the first onscreen appearance of Pokémon-EX in the Suocéverse and showcases some of the mechanics of this transformation, as the branded Hierarches are given a compulsory command to prostrate themselves before their lords. It is also shown that their scales give off a dim golden light, visible in the otherwise dark tribute chamber. Previously, Pokémon-EX had only been hinted at in Beyond Today .

Reshiram and Zekrom's jet-like powered take off scene and circling above the skies of Dragonspiral is also partially inspired by the take off ability and animation of the elder wyvern Valstrax in the Monster Hunter franchise, who also uses jet-like powered propulsion via a system of “dragon energy” vents built into its wings.

The language that the dragons speak is an adapted version of Dragonspeak, the language the dragons of the First Brood (the children of dragon protector Midgardsormr) speak in the universe of Final Fantasy XIV. The language is modified slightly for purposes of adaptation into Pokémon; Reddit user /u/Lazzitron assisted with the translation.
